Alarm systems: what should I look out for?
We often look for an alarm after someone has already broken in or tried to. That is when we choose in a hurry. A few steps help you choose well.
Compare the market
See which systems exist and what each one offers. There are cheap kits from non-specialist shops, with doubtful results, and branded systems from security companies that handle installation and maintenance. Judge each one by what it gives you, not only by price.
Ask for quotes
Describe your premises and requirements, so that technicians can visit, carry out a study and explain the differences. Compare prices and ask for clarification where needed.
Read every quote carefully
A quote should list the components (control panel, detectors, batteries, magnetic contacts, keypads), the brand and country of origin, the final cost with or without VAT, the length of the warranty and any other charges.
Wireless or wired?
Wireless goes in quickly with little disruption. Wired takes more work and holes for the cables, but relies on more dependable technology and is harder to tamper with. Both need regular maintenance and battery changes.
Branded or unbranded?
Look into the brand and its reliability, ask people you know, ask about after-sales service and compare warranties.
Pick the right keypad
It is the only visible part and the one you will use every day. Ask to see how it works, whether it lights up and what it does in a panic. Discuss where it should go, too.
